Our Vineyards

Sunny days, mild nights, star-filled skies and fertile soils are the ideal growing conditions for the 1700 acres of vineyard planted on the Zilzie property. 

In addition to our own premium vineyards, we also reach beyond our boundaries seeking exceptional parcels of fruit from some of Australia’s best known wine regions, including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Coonawarra, and Clare Valley.

Zilzie Wines is Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Certified, a national program that supports grapegrowers and winemakers to demonstrate and continuously improve sustainability in the vineyard and winery. Guided by global best practices, it reinforces our commitment to ongoing improvement and transparency.

Carbon Emissions 

& Energy Usage

Our commitment involves actively reducing carbon emissions and aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2027.

Zilzie Solar Farm

Zilzie has one of the largest single-site ground-based solar plant in the Australian wine industry. Producing approximately 1/3 of our requirement during vintage/peak production.

 

- Zilzie’s solar plant houses 3024 solar panels

- Generating 1579 mwh per annum

- Offsetting 1879 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per annum

Water Conservation

Given Zilzie Wine’s location, water conservation has remained a constant priority. Furthermore, continued efforts from the entire Zilzie team have led to a notable reduction in water usage. As a result, the average now stands impressively at 2.17 litres of water per litre of wine produced over a five-year period.

We are dedicated to actively practicing, promoting, and supporting “Reusable, Recyclable, or Compostable” initiatives. Our goal is to reduce problematic, unnecessary single-use plastics and waste.

Glass Bottles

- On average are made from 30% recycled materials and are kerbside recyclable in most cities.

- We currently use lighter-in-weight glass bottles across over 90% of our wines and continue exploring even lighter-weight options for select products. Using lighter-weight glass reduces resource and energy consumption during production and lowers energy use during transportation.

We have removed unnecessary dividers (where is it safe to do so) from 81% of our product range, with plans to increase this 90% over coming year.

Our History

Our ancestors first landed their boots on this dusty property, just over 100 years ago. 

With backbreaking perseverance, under the scorching Australian sun, four generations of our family have turned their hand to many an agricultural pursuit. In the early 80’s, Ian & Roslyn Forbes followed their instincts and converted the property to vineyards, setting our family and future on a new course.

 

The love for this land is in our blood, and managing the winery and one of the largest vineyards in the district with some 1700 acres under vine, is a family affair. Brothers Andrew and Steven Forbes now manage the vineyards and winery.

 

It brings us great joy to watch our children take to the land as effortlessly as we did, enjoying the freedom and freshness of the property and the promise of another generation eager to carry on our passion for this land.
